Cardamom: The Aromatic Digestive
Cardamom is the spice people own without ever learning. It costs more per gram than almost anything else on the shelf, carries more health claims than it can support, and usually gets thrown away stale. This book is about using it well and believing the right things about it.

The problem this book solves
Cardamom is expensive, and expensive things attract claims. It is sold as a treatment for blood pressure, for weight, for blood sugar and for the liver — almost always on the strength of studies in which participants swallowed grams of powder in capsules, and nobody drank a cup of anything.
Meanwhile the things cardamom genuinely does — settle a heavy meal, clear the breath, transform a bake or a pot of coffee — get less attention than they deserve, because they are modest and true rather than dramatic and marketable.
This book takes the expensive spice seriously in both directions: what to spend money on, and what not to believe.
What makes it different
Every claim carries an evidence grade, shown inline, so you can see the strength of the support without leaving the sentence:
- S — Strong: supported by human clinical studies
- P — Preliminary: early or small human data
- V — Lab: cell or animal work, mechanism only
- T — Traditional: historical use, not clinically proven
Cardamom needs that grading more than most. Its best-known health claim — that it lowers blood pressure — rests on trials of cardamom powder swallowed in capsules at gram doses, reported almost everywhere as though it were about a cup of tea. The book quotes the dose, every time.

Black Pepper: Nature's Bioavailability Booster
Black pepper sits on every table in the world and is almost never thought about. It changes how other compounds behave in your body — which is exactly why a piperine capsule is not the same thing as seasoning your dinner.

Garam Masala
Garam Masala: No Recipe, No Turmeric, No Heat
Garam masala is the most-owned and least-understood jar in a Western kitchen — bought for one recipe, added with the onions the way the recipe said, and never thought about again. Three things built into the name and the packet send cooks the wrong way: it is not hot, there is no such thing as the recipe, and it is a finishing blend rather than a base. This book gives each of its twelve spices a job, fixes the timing that ruins more curries than anything else, and settles the curry powder question properly.
Warming, not hot — and it belongs at the end, not the start.
